Low Back Pain Had me in Handcuffs
My personal experience with back pain
4 years ago I had a small bout of low back pain (ironically while I was in chiropractic school). The pain started out pretty small, it was sharp but wouldn’t last long. Fast forward 4 months and it started to become more noticeable throughout my day. It wasn’t as sharp, but it was almost a constant dull ache in my low back. It started to interfere with my life outside of school. Fast forward again a few years into opening my clinic, and the pain was still there, but now it consumed MOST of my day and it was constantly on my mind. I was thinking about it every time I bent over at work, every time I put my newborn son in his crib or picked him up out of the crib. I even went through a prolonged period of not working out and avoiding the gym because of the fear and worry that it would get worse. I let myself go, and I was losing hope that it would get any better. It was consuming me. I was in my late 20’s. I thought to myself “I shouldn’t be dealing with this.”Fast forward to now: I still have some discomfort in my low back but it’s not as bothersome. It’s not near as constant. It’s no longer consuming me. I can play with my son, and get on the floor with my daughter without second thought. I can run, workout, and enjoy exercise again. So what changed? I took action on improving my situation. I created a plan for myself and stuck to it. And guess what? It worked. It took a heck of a lot of effort, energy, and time, but it worked. I knew I needed to do better. Not only for myself, but for my family, and for my patients. Maybe your pain is small right now…don’t let it get big and consume you like I did. Learn from my mistakes. And if you’re dealing with pain that is affecting your life, your activities, or your emotions. You NEED a plan. You NEED accountability. My kids and my family are my reason. What’s yours?
