Why Am I Not Improving?

When it comes to setting future running or training goals, such as being able to run 20 miles per week without knee pain, hip pain, heel pain, or swimming without shoulder pain, it can feel overwhelming to determine what actions to take today.

While it's relatively easy to identify the broad categories of things needed to achieve our goals, like improving hip mobility or increasing leg and core strength, the challenge lies in pinpointing the specific actions required on a daily basis to make progress.

For instance, when aiming to improve hip mobility, should you focus on muscle stretching, joint mobility exercises, Yoga, deep tissue massage, or track strides? And even if you can compile a list of options, the next hurdle is deciding which one is most effective and how often it should be done for optimal results.

This dilemma is a common one, as I've observed in my clinic time and time again. Runners often come in with a clear goal and an understanding of what they need to do, but they struggle with translating those insights into daily actions.

Have you experienced this struggle yourself? I know I have in various aspects of my life.

The consequence of not knowing which actions to take today is significant—we procrastinate, impeding our progress and pushing tasks off until tomorrow.

I was once taught by a mentor that "the actions you take TODAY will either create a foundation to build upon or a box to be limited by…choose wisely."

Having a plan, whether it's based on personal knowledge or guidance from an expert, provides the assurance that you're on the right track. This might involve following a specific hip mobility or strength program recommended by a professional.

However, sticking to familiar routines or failing to take action can trap us in a rigid box, limiting our potential. To break free, we need fresh perspectives, expert advice, and a solid plan.

Achieving long-term goals necessitates a focus on short-term actions, particularly daily ones.

Have you outlined what you need to do TODAY to reach your goals three months from now? Have you sought guidance from an expert or sought new information to break out of your current cycle?

If not, your first step is to do just that. Investing in expert help may require some financial commitment and humility, but it's a small price to pay compared to the missed opportunities and stagnant progress of staying within your comfort zone.

And when you take confident steps based on a well-thought-out plan, the journey becomes invigorating and enjoyable.
