How to Keep Moving When Pain Gets In The Way

Somedays are easy, some are not.

We’ve all been there, right?

Those days when you're just NOT feeling it. When the stress, chaos, and pain are stacked against you, leaving you unmotivated to get moving. Or when a recent flare-up makes you hesitant to even think about a workout or weekend trip, worried you might make things worse or trigger even more discomfort.

This is something I discuss with my patients all the time. It’s one of the biggest reasons why having a rehab clinician on your side can be such a game-changer. Together, we dig into what's really going on beneath the surface—the physical pain, the fear of making it worse—and we come up with a plan that keeps them on track, even if it means adjusting the intensity or swapping in some mobility work instead of a full-blown session. It's about finding a way to stay in the moving, rather than throwing in the towel.

Because let’s face it: life is unpredictable, and pain can be relentless. But having the right support system in place can help you navigate those tough days and keep you moving forward, even if it's just a small step.

So, when you’re at that crossroads, ask yourself: what would it look like to do something instead of nothing? How can you shift the narrative from “I can’t” to “What can I do today?”

It's not about perfection; it’s about progress, however small. And sometimes, the biggest breakthroughs happen on those days when you just show up, even if it’s not at full strength. Those are the days that build resilience and keep you grounded in your commitment to yourself.

After all, it's easy to stay on course when everything is going well. But the true test is how you handle the tough days. What do you do when the plan goes sideways, when pain lingers, and when life feels heavy? That’s where the real growth happens.

So ask yourself, what’s one small step you can take today that will move you closer to where you want to be tomorrow?
