The Pain isn’t Bad Enough....Yet
I think you might resonate with my patient, Ben.
He recently shared something with me that I couldn’t agree with more. He said, “I wish I had started treatment with you sooner.”
For years, Ben had been chasing quick fixes for an injury he’d been dealing with. And honestly, I get it. Who doesn’t want a quick fix? In today’s world, we’ve been conditioned to expect instant results.
Order something online, and it’s on your doorstep the same day. Send a text to someone halfway across the world, and they can reply immediately. Don’t know how to do something? A “how-to” video is just a click away.
But health… health doesn’t work like that. And Ben learned this the hard way.
Here’s Ben’s story.
Early in 2023, Ben found us through a word-of-mouth referral (which is the best kind of referral). He was dealing with chronic knee pain—mostly when running—but it would also flare up during golfing and CrossFit.
When he came in for his initial evaluation, we conducted a thorough orthopedic assessment, strength testing, and movement analysis. Afterward, I knew we could help him achieve lasting relief. He’d been relying on short-term fixes like injections, over-the-counter meds, and massages for years, so I presented a personalized treatment plan to address the root cause of his pain and help him recover fully.
But here’s the thing—after just one session, Ben felt much better that he told me he didn’t want to commit to a program. He said, “I feel good enough”.
The truth? His pain wasn’t “bad enough” yet for him to see the bigger picture: a consistent, structured treatment plan was what he truly needed.
I explained what might happen if he didn’t address the root cause of his problem, but he decided to hold off.
Six months later, Ben called me in a panic. This time, the pain was constant, relentless, and affecting every part of his life—his work as an executive, his role as a husband, and his ability to be an active dad. He admitted that the short-term fixes had stopped working.
He also told me about his annual guys’ trip to Montana to fish at the end of September. His knee hurt so much that he feared he might have to cancel. At that moment, Ben was finally ready to take action and solve this once and for all.
This time, he fully committed to the comprehensive treatment plan. Within just four weeks, he began experiencing what lasting results actually feel like.
And you know what? Ben went on that fishing trip. He caught some beautiful trout and made memories with his friends. More importantly, he didn’t stop care the moment he felt a little better. Now, Ben truly understands the value of continuing to get stronger and more mobile so he can put this injury to rest for good.
The only thing he regrets? Not starting sooner.
Ben isn’t alone in this. Many of my patients wait until their pain is unbearable before taking action, and almost all of them share the same regret: waiting too long.
Here’s the truth: there are no quick fixes. I’ve spent years—and hundreds of hours in continued education—searching for a magic solution. If it exists, I haven’t found it.
What I have found are solutions that work—solutions that require time, commitment, and guidance.
